The Surgery

The Surgery has been established in Kingswinford since the early 1930s. The Doctor at that time is still remembered for carrying out his visits by means of his pony and trap. The present premises were purpose-built in 1993 and are situated close to the centre of Kingswinford village (see area profile). With the ever-increasing need to develop “in house” patient services we have extended the premises in the past two years. This included additional consulting rooms for GP Registrars and medical students, an enlarged administration area and “on site” pharmacy. We recognise that further developments in primary care premises will be needed in the years to come.

The Surgery Team

There are currently nine doctors, of whom three are female. We have between us enhanced skills in palliative care, asthma, diabetes, clinical governance, undergraduate education and contraception. We provide a full range of disease management clinics, health promotion clinics and have facilities to provide minor surgical procedures.

The Surgery employs 20 staff members, and also accommodates the community team in the building. To enhance our patient care, other service providers hold sessions within the Surgery including physiotherapy, counselling, community psychiatric nurses, chiropody, midwifery and the heart failure nurse specialist. One of our receptionists is now a fully trained health care assistant. One of our practice nurses have expanded their role to that of a “Generic Nurse” to provide services in the community as well as the Surgery.

Education and Training

The Surgery has provided GP Registrar training continuously since 1973. Since 1999 the Surgery has been an accredited Firm 1 Teaching Practice for the University of Birmingham and takes groups from each of the four years. Again, the whole Surgery is involved, led by Drs Hopkin, Brindley, Kuligowski and Sobainsky. Dr Parnell currently leads for the 5th year medical student attachments.

Medical Students

We are an approved training Surgery under the aegis of the University of Birmingham. We train medical students throughout their five years’ training. The Practice teaches a large number of medical students and we also score very well on the feedback.  This would not be possible without the kind and generous support of our patients and we are most grateful for all patients who agree to see students and are so helpful.  Please contact Janet if you are able to help us. Many thanks.
